Blog Tour | Game Day Collection by Lori Whitlock

After a whole week (and really the last few months) of lots of girl sewing I’m excited to bring something for my little guy today!   The Game Day collection  designed by Lori Whitlock for Riley Blake is SO fun!  It’s the perfect mix of juvenile but still cool for older kids,  even the girl said, “hey, that’s awesome fabric, can I get something too??”

After using knits for so much it takes some thought for me to decide on woven patterns.  Recently this kid has outgrown ever jacket in the closet and while it’s starting to warm up, there are still those days that need something lightweight.  So, jacket it was!  Plus a jacket has been on my bucket list for awhile now, might as well check it off right?!

I looked at a few pattern options but ultimately loved the versatility that the Starboard Jacket from Peekaboo Pattern Shop provided.  Can be made with wovens, knits, nylon, PUL, really almost anything since it doesn’t require any ease or stretch. While I did have to make something with my nemesis, the zipper, I have to say it really wasn’t so bad and I’m thrilled with how it turned out!

photo-11
Our photoshoot went downhill quickly when Daddy gave him the water pack….

My favorite print from this line was the Sports Ticket in Navy, so I went with that for my main fabric.  The jacket is full lined  with knit gray and white 1″ stripes, also from Riley Blake.

Huge thank you to Lori for the invitation to join in her release tour! And to Riley Blake for generously sending both fabrics for this project.  Also to Peekaboo Pattern Shop for providing a copy of the Starboard Jacket pattern!

Don’t miss the rest of the stops this week to see some other awesome inspiriation for this fabulous collection!!

Growing Up Handmade Blog Tour Kickoff!

Welcome to our debut Growing Up Handmade blog tour!  I am so excited to be hosting this amazing group of bloggers, they have some really great ideas to share with you all!

logoguh.jpg

As a mom to a fabulous, independent, driven and sometimes full of attitude 9 year old, it’s been increasingly difficult to find that common ground when it comes to homemade clothing.  I have to be sure to find trendy fabrics and patterns so that what i’m making doesn’t just hang in the closet unworn.  I thought if I was having this issue there had to be others in the same boat, and wouldn’t it be great to have a whole week dedicated to ideas and styles that might make everyone’s job a little easier?!  So that brings us here!

photo-1-11

Follow along this week for lots of ideas that you can hopefully incorporate into your summer lineup!  BUT to sweeten the week, we have an AWESOME group of sponsors and we’ve been able to put together TWO incredible prize packages totaling over $500!!!!!

Blog Tour | One Thimble Issue 14

I can’t believe its already time for a new One Thimble issue!!  Seems like just yesterday I shared Issue 13 (maybe because it was one of the last few posts i’ve written… man that was a long holiday break, huh? sorry!)
ot14-hero-image-square-v1
I feel like I say it every issue but Jen and the contributors really knocked it out of the park!  Inside of Issue 14 you’ll find 10 full patterns, 6  awesome tutorials, 4 cool techniques to try, articles about your handmade business and a partridge in a pear tree… haha just kidding about the partridge but the rest is no joke!   OH… and if you get your issue before 2/13, you’ll get an early bird bonus!

These issues are so chalk full of information that printing them would be insanely expensive, so One Thimble is neatly packed into an E-Zine that you can easily swipe/scroll through on your table or pc and the patterns are all provided in PDF form so you can just print what you need.  It’s GENIUS!  and it keeps the price at only $25 AUD (for us girls in the US its under $20!!)

I’m dying to try the fabric covered snaps, and make a belt… do you know how hard it is to find toddler belts???
photo-3
I whipped up the romper from Thread Faction for my little guy and seriously I see about 100 more of these for our summer months!   I had planned a tee under it but he had a mind of his own this morning so we went with it… SO. IN. LOVE.
photo-1-8
I used an organic cotton interlock from Birch Fabrics, it was the perfect weight and so soft!  I also found some vintage buttons in the stash from my grandmother that were exactly what it needed.  These straps are non-functioning, but really easy to get on/off.  This goes from a 2T to 10 so I might try to convince miss opinionated 9 to try one too, if i’m lucky, lol
photo-7
photo-4
I also made one of the Hottie Covers.  I thought i’d move away from my norm and try this piecing, its so fun!! I’d have to say I think he likes it.  AND If you’re thinking to yourself, “We don’t even own a hot water bottle for that”…  never fear, I have a solution that i’ll be sharing later this week!
I used some knit scraps that were laying around and fleece but this would also be a great project to upcycle some old sweaters.

Blog Tour | Boys Can Wear Pink – Season 3

In a time where gender roles seem to still be so prominent, its nice to see that my efforts as a parent to let him be who he wants to be are paying off.  He seamlessly goes from playing with his trains and trucks to superheroes to dolls.  I’m sure it doesn’t hurt that he has a big sister… of course all her dolls and toys seem so sparkly and exciting (since they are supposed to be off limits) compared to his.  It’s really not uncommon to find him playing with her American Girls while she isn’t looking.

img_5036

It’s hard to believe this is the 3rd year I’m getting to participate in such an awesome movement.   With age comes independence and choices and this kid is starting to know what he wants, what he likes.  If you ask him to pick a color, he’d probably say purple, which is really just about as good as getting him in pink in my book. Lucky for me, he’s an easy kid… pockets and hoods.  That’s all he really cares about when i’m sewing for him.

photo-6-2

So pockets and a hood is what he got!  We used the nest pattern from New Horizons, the 11th Hour Gear collection.  Seriously folks this pattern has it all!  It includes a top, 2 styles of bottoms (joggers and lounge pants) and comes in sizes 3-6m all the way to big kid 16.

I lined the pockets with the pink beetles and also added it for the cuff of his joggers (although a little harder to see).  Can you tell he’s gearing up for baseball season?  He swings just about anything… maybe that’s just a boy thing?

Seriously though, photographing a 2.5 year old???  Most of our pictures looked like that… always on the go!  Believe it or not, I got a few standing still but we just couldn’t lose that shovel, haha!

Our fabric choice this year is from Znok Designs, pink for sure, but look at all those bugs!  I had planned on using it for Ryleigh but honestly I’m loving it for him!

photo-1-9

For the hoodie I went with a German patter from a company called Rockerbuben.  The Mini Flo.  Euro patterns can have a learning curve for sure but with the help of Google translate and a little bit of experience they can be really awesome!

I’d been looking for a new hoodie pattern (you know to add to the 20 that I already have, haha!)  This one stood out to me, I loved the colorblocking and the little insert in the hood, so fun!

photo-5

He was SO determined to get this sucker picked up with the shovel, LOL

bcwp-storyboard

Apparently he wasn’t the only one who really wanted that sucker either… hahahaha!  Meet our monster goldendoodle,  Lilo!  I don’t think I’ve shared much since we got her, but my guess is she will find her way in to our pics here and there.

Pattern Review | Made for Mermaids Rowan Raglan

I had the pleasure of sewing up a few versions of the Rowan Raglan and i’m excited to finally be able to share.  I’m totally a sucker for being able to buy 1 pattern and use it for both kiddos AND have it fit both well.  I’m happy to report that this is one unisex pattern that I will most definitely be using again!

Read all about the multitude of options and get some inspiration from a few of the other reviewers on today’s Pattern Revolution blog.

Duds for Dudes – a tour of all things boy (and our neighborhood)

IMG_9931

By now you likely all know my love for Euro fabrics, so when Mabel Madison made a call for boys blog tour, you didn’t have to twist my arm to sign up!   They carry an awesome variety of high quality knits and an especially good section of more boyish prints.  They were also awesome enough to provide the fabric for today’s post, so huge thank you to Emily at Mabel Madison!

I fell in love with these Happy Little Buses by Stenzo and knew they would make the perfect summer shorts.  I had a slightly different plan for the stars (also Stenzo) but things changed, so while this is a little busier than my normal choices for an outfit, its a great match for my busy guy.  And speaking of busy…he is ALWAYS on the move, as evident in our photo shoot, haha!  I thought i’d let him lead the way (since asking him to stand still and smile is out of the question) and he led alright… a tour all around the neighborhood!  LOL!!

IMG_9920

The Coastal Craze Baggies were EXACTLY what i’d envisioned for these shorts.  Knee length but not sloppy, POCKETS and an elastic waist. I’d come across them in the Peek-a-Boo shop before I think, but sometimes I need to have a fabric in mind for me to really decide on a pattern.  I sent a message about wanting to use the pattern and  Amy from Peek-a-Boo was kind enough to send it over for me to feature for today.

IMG_9917

As with every PAB pattern i’ve used in the past, the directions were clear and the pieces all went together perfectly.   I’m thrilled with how they fit and we will be using this pattern for ALOT more this season.

IMG_9927

The top I decided on is the Jolly Roger Raglan from Patterns for Pirates.  Just a simple raglan but fits well and is a super quick sew.

Of course he would be drawn to the drains, anything that should be off limits right?

After following along to all of his “come on mom, your too slow” motions I have to say, this kid is the best.  He’s so curious, and has found lots of things he loves doing, things he giggles a little after he does cause he knows its not ok… like walking the curb 😉

Mabel Madison is really thrilled to host a week-long blog tour focused on sewing for BOYS! Every day this week, you’ll have a chance to visit with a few of our friends and see what they have made for their boys. Here are today’s stops:

Spring Break PJ Party – Elliedactyl Jadyn Party PJs

It seems fitting that the Elliedactyl pajama pattern is actually the Jadyn Party Pajamas since they are making an appearance on the Spring Break PJ Party Tour today.

It’s no secret that I love everything Elliedactyl and since I didn’t have time when these were in testing to give them a try I knew they would be my choice for this tour.  And as expected, they didn’t disappoint.

edit-9607

The only downfall is they are so cute you don’t even realize they are pj’s!  This may lead to your child not wanting to take them off and head out into the world in the same clothes they rolled out of bed in, HAHA!

edit-9615

While I had a grand plan for this photo shoot, we know what happens to grand plans when your trying to get out of town on vacation right?  they go out the window!  At least for me, cause really, i’ll be honest, i’m the queen of procrastination.  At least I can admit it right?

edit-9609

I decided what would be even better than a staged shoot at the studio would be if I took them while we were REALLY on spring break!  So excuse my poor lighting and hotel bed, and say hello real life spring break in studio condo with 2 kids…

edit-9608

I’ve been waiting for a chance to get some jammies made for Reid with this awesome fabric from Peek-A-Boo Fabric Shop.  I mean, it really fits him to a T!!  Most days he reminds me a little of the Tasmanian Devil, remember that little cloud of dust tornado?  Yep, thats this kid!  The stars are from TKBPrints and are my go to coordinate for most of his stuff.  They just match everything!  They do have a retail site but things sell out pretty quickly so I suggest following them on Facebook for updates and new orders.

edit-9613

He thought it was pretty funny that he was allowed to jump on the bed. Not a smart momma move. Obviously, he had no interest in stopping. As I was correcting him, he must have thought if he turned around and couldn’t see me anymore, I wouldn’t be able to see him either, WRONG! Still in trouble, little man!

edit-9619

He finally sat down and tried to give me that “but i’m so cute, how could you be mad at me” face. ahhhhhh…. yes I melt every time.

Boys Can Wear Pink – Season 2

12771936_10208482198431496_2796507685679699141_o
When I was given the chance to participate in this amazing tour again this year, I jumped at it.  I had such a good time last year with my little guy and I knew I could do something epic again this year.

IMG_8972

Last year my motivation was a little different, he was a newborn, he was expected to have a closet full of greens and blues and browns.  And while that is fine and well, its nice to have some variety.  There’s no reason little (or big) boys shouldn’t wear whatever they want, pink, purple, orange, yellow, red, blue… none of these colors mean anything about WHO they are.  Pink makes a boy no less of a boy and while there will always be someone to say otherwise, I want my boy to grow up knowing it doesn’t make a difference.

(Hope you don’t mind, i’m sneaking in a flash back… )
download

Now that he’s a year older, my opinion is not only on what he wears but what he plays with.  He has an older sister with a million dolls… so YES he’s going to play with them.  He LOVES them, he carries them around, pushes a baby in the stroller and has a great time doing it.  Why shouldn’t he?  Dolls aren’t just for girls, just like pink isn’t either.

IMG_8977

I had the opportunity to test this SWEET pattern from Terra’s Treasures, the Elevation Hoodie (coming this week!!) and I just knew it had to be what I featured today.  When I bought these cute little raccoons I thought they would be red, imagine my surprise to open a package of pink, but hey, even better right?!?!  I got those from Jumping June Textiles, while i’m fairly certain they are sold out, you should check out the other amazing Euro prints she carries.

IMG_8982

He relunctanly gave up his baby when I suggested that there might be pockets on his hoodie.  He’s just learning why pockets are so awesome and how much stuff he can sneak into one.     Gosh when did he get so big???

edit-9008 copy

I recently  made these pink dragon Max Joggers from Max & Meena and thought they would be perfect to share today too.   You can find the pink Znok dragons at Halla Fabric, if you hurry  I think they are still in stock!!  They pair nicely with his new Wild and Free shirt my friend Julie sent him.  I’d say it suits him to a TEE!  HAHA!!  They are available at her shop Chestnut Street Duds if your interested.

He’s letting me know its too cold to stay out any longer so off we go… the baby back in arms to keep him happy on the walk back.

Skirt Fabric: Vivid Leilani Spearmint Knit by Riley Blake for Patty Young
I am thrilled that I was invited to sew something up, so I decided to go with a BRAND NEW pattern, the Girls Capsule Skirt.  One of the things I think that really sets EYMM apart is the patterns all have amazing size ranges to accommodate just about anyone you will be sewing for.  This girls skirt starts at newborn and goes up to girls 18, plus as an added bonus has a matching doll skirt for 15″ or 18″ dolls.

We really love yoga waists around here so this pattern will for sure be a go-to.  It meets all 3 of my 3 major criteria, amazingly quick to make, knit (it has to be comfy), and a yoga waist.  It even has pockets which is usually a request from my daughter.

IMG_6099

As you can see we are still in comfy/play summer mode here but it could easily be dressed up a bit, making it very versatile.Untitled-1

AND as if all that wasn’t enough, you can even make matching mommy & me skirts since there is a women pattern as well.  We didn’t match (and she’s not very interested in us doing that anymore) but the version for women is every bit as easy and fabulous as the girls!

Now for our virtual goodie bags (what’s a party without one right??)  How about we start with a coupon for 43% off the WHOLE store!?  Yep, that’s right just, you can save 43% off your purchase at EYMM (affiliate link) with the coupon code EYMM.  This makes many of the Mommy & Me bundles up to 68% off.  This is good now through 11:59pm PST on Monday 8/3/15.
