Adventures in Quilting РBloom Quilt Block  10

To those of you that know me, this may seem out of the norm. Or on the other hand you may know that I love a challenge, and trying out new things, so it may not seem so strange.

Quilting is something that just never really attracted my attention.  I spent ALOT of time at a local quilt shop as I was starting Beri Bee; and if I’m honest I wouldn’t likely be where I am now without the encouragement of the ladies there. That said, even seeing the amazing work from Janet, Alice, Lisa and others there, I never gave it a try.    If your ever in Southern California you’ll have to check out SLO Creative Studio.  Janet moved out west and has a new shop out there. Don’t tell me you went though, it will just make me jealous ūüėČ

Well hell must have frozen over cause here it is! My first ever quilt block!!

This is Block 10 from the Bloom Quilt pattern by Lori Holt.  I have been drooling over these Wonderland fabrics so I decided to use them for my block instead but for the most part the pattern is the same.

The Sew Simple Shapes from Lori Holt made the appliqu√© so easy!  I just traced onto the Pellon, stitched them to the fabric and turned.

You may notice one tiny difference in mine from the others along the tour, and I apologize, I had to make the rounded leaves versus the more triangle style because of a small mixup with the templates I was sent. I really still love it so no problem  here.

I even attached all the appliqu√© by hand! Something else that’s on my list of seeing to avoid… Anything by hand. But, and don’t anyone repeat this, it was kind of relaxing and I may have even enjoyed it a little, haha!

Now to decide what to do with my lone block… Make more? Or find a project to incorporate this one?

Want to see more inspiration from the Bloom quilt sewalong? Head over to Lori’s page, or visit the Riley Blake blog to see other versions of this block plus the previous blocks from Bloom.

Skirt Fabric: Vivid Leilani Spearmint Knit by Riley Blake for Patty Young
I am thrilled that I was invited to sew something up, so I decided to go with a BRAND NEW pattern, the Girls Capsule Skirt.  One of the things I think that really sets EYMM apart is the patterns all have amazing size ranges to accommodate just about anyone you will be sewing for.  This girls skirt starts at newborn and goes up to girls 18, plus as an added bonus has a matching doll skirt for 15″ or 18″ dolls.

We really love yoga waists around here so this pattern will for sure be a go-to.  It meets all 3 of my 3 major criteria, amazingly quick to make, knit (it has to be comfy), and a yoga waist.  It even has pockets which is usually a request from my daughter.

As you can see we are still in comfy/play summer mode here but it could easily be dressed up a bit, making it very versatile.Untitled-1

AND as if all that wasn’t enough, you can even make matching mommy & me skirts since there is a women pattern as well.  We didn’t match (and she’s not very interested in us doing that anymore) but the version for women is every bit as easy and fabulous as the girls!

Perfect 10 Blog Tour

One of the best ways that I make time to sew for my own kiddos is pattern testing and/or reviewing.  Miss R has needed some new shirts so I was really excited to help Cassie at Little Lizard King test her newest pattern.  I was even more excited when she suggested I join in the blog tour to share one of my tiny changes in a tutorial.

IMG_348web

This is the 4th shirt i’ve made since I started testing this pattern few weeks ago, we loved it that much!! ¬†And there are so many variations to mix and match (10 to be exact), you could make it a hundred times and it wouldn’t look the same. ¬†For this one she picked this sweet floral print from Riley Blake. ¬†I’ve had the large floral for awhile now but the tiny little coordinate just showed up in a scrap swap with some girls from Pattern Revolution. ¬†(that might be a little hint at an upcoming post over there ūüėČ )

She loves the little heart pocket, can you tell??

IMG_3470web

My personal preference on 3/4 sleeves is a wider band at the hem. ¬†I love the bolder look there and its a nice way¬†to accent a different fabric. ¬†So i’m going to share a few steps to make that little adjustment.

IMG_3484web

You can really make this any width you want but for the size 6, the pattern calls for 1.75″ x 7.5″ for a normal arm band, I just adjusted that to 4.5″.

And now you’re all set to go back to the pattern and attach to the sleeve as directed.
