CraftingCon | My Wannabe Wizard

I am so excited to finally get to share with you all!  This is my first entry as a contestant for CraftingCon and with this month’s theme of Harry Potter it could not have been more perfect!

img_2019

Our whole family is obsessed with Harry Potter.  My husband and I were dating when the movies started coming out and it was a tradition that we see then on opening day with each new release.  I still will argue that the books were 100 times better 🙂

Now that Ryleigh is older, its been so fun to share the Potter Love with her!  She’s been reading the books and we have a Harry marathon at least once a month.  Reid has even gotten into watching with us!!

We had such a blast creating our look!  (I say we because of course I had Ryleigh’s expert advice!)  As a contestant, the challenged is to sew/craft a look for the theme without making a costume.  To see more of what I made for our entry head over to the CraftingCon blog for the full post.

Blog Tour – One Thimble E-zine Issue #12

Can you believe its that time again already??  The newest issue of One Thimble has hit the virtual stands and its amazing! (as if we had any doubts, right?!)

111teaser

I have a few things i’ve been making from this and i’m going to share one of them today.   I was in a little fender bender this weekend and its slowed my sewing down a little so I do apologize.  Stay tuned for this sweet little number still to come!!

But while you wait, I have been dying to share these pictures of the Thread Faction #111 Dress.  I’ll be honest, I’m pretty sure this is my first Thread Faction pattern and all I can say is WOW!   I really love the simplicity of the #111 dress.  Oh and don’t let the word simplicity fool you though… there is nothing plain about this dress.  I can see endless possibilities to add your own twist or style to it, making it so super special.

Here in the midwest we have hot fall weather pretty frequently, so I moved on from bright summer colors and paired up this gorgeous geometric fox print (from Sweet N Charmed Fabrics) with a drape-y tan slub knit.   We are loving it for back to school and it will be perfect as it cools down too, layered with long sleeves and leggings.

The pattern comes in sizes 2-10 and features a fully lined bodice.  Its a great pattern for intermediate beginners who already have some basic sewing skills.  The skirt is actually gathered with clear elastic which is a great technique to learn if you haven’t tried it before.

Afraid to commit to the whole magazine?  You could always just buy single patterns but lets do some math…. The Thread Faction dress i’ve shared today is $8.00 … the other patterns range from $6-$15 and include everything from accessories to a woman’s skirt.   For $25 you get 10 … yes TEN patterns, plus over 20 articles with tons of tips and tricks of the trade.  No brainer right?!?!    Or you could go ahead and just buy the 3 or so you want and spend $30… your choice! 😉

Happy 2nd Anniversary Sofilantjes!!

I’m thrilled to be helping celebrate Sofilantjes’ 2nd Anniversary!  Anne is an amazing designer and her patterns are so well loved in our house.  I’ve been fortunate enough to be on her testing team for several patterns and I’m always in awe of her unique ideas.

It’s always a huge plus for me when I can use the same patterns for both kids.  I have a horrible  wonderful pattern buying habit and I suppose being able to reduce a few here or there is probably helpful, haha!  Even better, is when you can (with a little experience) throw a few patterns together to get something completely new!

The Summer Surprise Top has been on my list to try for awhile now.  It has a sweet back bow and little pleat in the front that takes just a simple tee/tank and bumps it up a notch.

The Domi Sweats are in my tried and true stack of bottom patterns.  We love the rounded pockets (although Miss Thang said she didn’t want pockets this time) and since they come in shorts or pants they are perfect year round.

IMG_0621
To combine the two I started with the Skinny Top version and lowered the bow by about an inch in the back.  I wanted to make sure it was easy enough to slide up and down over the shoulders, but not too easy.  Then I added a few rows of shirring along the bottom of the top.

I made the pants per the pattern, only shortening them a little to an in between shorts/capri length.  Instead of adding the waistband I just attached the pants directly to the top.  Voila!

Can you tell she loved it??  With just a few days left of 2nd grade she says her outfits have to be just right and I was informed this one makes the cut! Go mom!! haha!   (side note… I cannot believe my baby will be in imagesrd grade!!)

As she gets older cutesy fabrics just don’t fly around here for anything but pj’s.  For this one Halla Fabricss sent me this gorgeous blue chevron from Znok, isn’t it amazing?  And the gray Stenzo solid from Mabel Madison was a perfect match!

Lil Luxe Collection Sew ‘n Style – “Second Grade Cool”

Finally!!  After the last few weeks of chaos,  between my pneumonia, Ry not feeling well, and an SD card that got deleted (after our original photo shoot)  HERE IT IS….

So the challenge was simple “Create a three piece mini collection with a clear theme”.  Ry and I went to the drawing board (aka – Pinterest) and found this gorgeous color collection for inspiration –

AutumnSpectrum

Now a theme… as she is getting older, its been more challenging to sew things for her that she will wear on an everyday basis.  She’s come home mentioning that kids make fun of stuff that I make (which is heartbreaking) and so we decided to put together a mini capsule wardrobe of things that were all “Second Grade Cool” .  Things that she felt comfortable wearing to school, that really fit with a style she likes and let her feel fashionable (even in mom-made clothes).

IMG_6929

Geez, is it wrong that I admit i’m a tad jealous of her collection??  Why can’t I make myself this put together? hahaha!!!  With so many mix and match options, this gives us lots of argument free mornings!

So in love with how the Slim Trousers turned out.  Still a little sad that we missed adding the zippers but I guess that’s what I get for not double checking that I was buying matching zippers when I got them.

A New Pattern Designer and A Late Tutorial – The Pocket Full of Posies Skirt

IMG_6839

So this was scheduled for yesterday but it never posted… SO here we are again, with a late Tuesday Tutorial.  I am so excited to share this one with you though because its for a brand new pattern from a new designer.  Meet Elliedactyl.  Annelise has been in the sewing world for quite some time and I’ve been lucky enough to work on a few sew-alongs with her in the Backstitch Back Room.  Now she’s venturing off on her own and she has nailed it with this first pattern.

IMG_6838

The Pocket Full of Posies is a knit skirt with 2 HUGE side pockets… what girl doesn’t have a million things to carry around with her?  I mean i’m ready for this in my size even!

I wanted to share with you today how you can take some old t-shirts and recycle them to use for the pockets.  This is perfect for a school spirit skirt like i’m showing here, or even a camp shirt, special group or just that tee that you can’t bear to part with from your younger days.  Your possibilities are endless.

IMG_6823

The easiest way to get the best use from your shirt is open it up from the back.  This gives you the widest possible piece of fabric and helps eliminate having to piece anything together.   You will want to cut straight up the back, and across both shoulder seams so that it opens up flat like the picture below.

After you have it laid out, you take  your pattern piece and lay it out so that your graphic is centered and cut it out just like you would traditional fabric.

IMG_6829

Once your pieces are cut just follow the pattern directions as written for a game stopping skirt!
